In relation to my last post on finding meaning, I found this article by Nina Burrowes, written for the Guardian Women in Leadership Network, resonated loudly. Above all, that authenticity isn't just about being honest and open. First you must be active in creating and building a genuine article. Who are you and what do you stand for? It takes going beyond conforming to what you think others want you to be and itmay tak the courage to step away from the immediate desire for approval, recognition and reward of the systems around you. But, she argues, and I would agree, being a good leader requires authenticy and the rewards are great.
It is so easy to say or do nothing. To just accept things for being as they are and to justify keeping silent for the sake of keeping the peace. And keeping the peace is important, but that should not be mistaken for willfull blindness, failing to stand up for what you know to be right (or wrong) for fear of the personal consequences/ discomfort. I watched an excellent TED talk about this, which talked about the courage of those who act on their convictions and place the wellbeing of all ahead of their own comfort and well-being. It can be a tough road, but an important one.
